Glasgow??? Oh, excellent! Look forward to more details as and when you know them. Me and Joe will be in the front row:)

Re payment for anthology contributions: no worries here. By the time my bank takes their conversion cut and various mysterious 'administrative charges' there's never much left from foreign sales anyway.

Re potential titles: I always liked your old one-word titles (Try, Closer, Guide etc). Depending on the themes which may or not be emerging from the collection, may I suggest an ambigious 'Damage(d)'?

Have to agree with Jax-its strange how for me, the one word titles have had the most impact, even though its one word. I guess those words have just set a standard for the story in a way that no long title really could.

Have you seen Christmas on Earth by Barbara Rubin? I'm so freakin curious about it, and was wondering if it was any good

I always wondered why you did the one word title things
It's both really approp and maddenin, but so are your books in a way, it's like you're trying to put your finger on them and then you think who am i shitting

i don't think damage would be a good title sorry jax
because in the other books he tended to use titles that sound ambiguous like you said but that you kind of get after you read the book--or you kind of think ya do

if he uses something like damage, that immediately puts an image in your head in a way that try, closer, guide don't quite do until you read the book and he redefines these words for you, ya know?
unless he titled a book damage and it was all about bunnies and meadows and dried flowers or somethin'

Hey hows the Krampus research going?? My friend Gerli who lives in bavaria was telling me that Krampus is so huge there. and also it's not only big among the metal fans that you mentioned but also jocks and macho guys. so around krampus the jocks start going crazy and metaphorically howling at the moon and beating up nerdy kids and stuff.. it's just like the years best excuse for them to revel in their highschool jockiness and fuck with people.. food for thought.

I don't know much about what's going to be in the anthology, but I've always found that books with odd, stark titles catch my attention the best.

Maybe something along the lines of "You Can't Have A Dinosaur" or something like that. Something that sounds like a children's book but has a very odd edge to it and leaves you thinking.

It would probably be true if I said that I've never heard a Sparks song. Should I start with the new lp???

Alright, at yr request, here's my Record Label top 10 of all time. I'm gonna cheat and break a rule that I laid down by listing more than one album as the greatest or most representative of each label (you can do the same, DC, cuz I've found that listing one is, in some cases, unrealistic and daunting). You'll also find my list excludes (save for one instance) major labels (although some are/were backed by majors). I had to limit myself to labels which I am totally familliar with at least 75% of the roster. Also, my age is clearly a factor here...most of these labels are relatively new (some newborn) - no obscure 60s private presses here.

Here it is:

10. Matador
"Crooked Rain..." Pavement
"The Covers Record" Cat Power
Matador is the label that surprises me the most - in the sense that everytime I think that they've put out their last classic, they follow it with another one every couple years. I'm a little too young to remember Sub Pop's heyday, so this is the first label that I remember KNOWING the label and thinking that there was a cool factor surrounding it.

9. Definitive Jux
"Def Jux Presents" (Vol. 1) - Comp
There were a couple years when indie rock got so unbelievably stale that I started listening to indie rap, which at the time was more challenging and satisyfing to me than anything else going on. This compilation - which featured Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, and RJD2 - gave me one of the greatest musical ephiphanies of my life. In the beginning, Def Jux put out total brainfuck records which I needed like drugs. The label pretty much sucks now (and hasn't put out a decent record in 3 years), but to this day no one has ever come close to matching the sound El-P (who, in my mind is the true heir to sonic youth) created with this record and others.

8. Chainsaw
"Captain, My Captain" - Team Dresch
"The Need Is Dead" - The Need
In highschool I had a lesbian friend who, because she knew I liked "weird" rock music that was not commercial, tried to shove tons of riot grrl down my throat. Most of it was wretched, but some (sleater-kinney, who actually released their first album on CHAINSAW) was quite good. Team Dresch was the best of the bunch, and to this day Captain My Captain is my favorite record to PUT ON, if that makes any sense. Chainsaw is a lesbian-centric label run by Donna Dresch (who stinted in Dinosaur Jr. for a spell when Lou left). While I tend to cringe at the thought of any kind of "gay community", I have to say that this label is pretty great.

Alright...I'm gonna start being a little more brief....

7. Elektra
"Funhouse" - Stooges
"Kiss Me x 3" - Cure
"Vespertine" - Bjork
A buttload of my all-time favorite records happen to have been released on elektra. I have no real fanatical knowlege of their greatness. It's just something I've noticed. Bonus points for being aligned with 4AD.

6. Gold Standard Laboratories
"Convocation Of..." - Convocation Of
Satisfies my need for lavishly packaged vinyl and drug-punk.

5. Kranky
"E Luxo So" - Labradford
"Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada" - GYBE!
"Streetdad" - Outhud
I love that they are known for releasing tons of (often brilliant) minimalist new-agey shit - but every so often they throw a fucking fantastic curveball that changes the shape of underground music.

4. 75 Ark
"3030" - Deltron
"Music To Make Love..." - Lovage
Defunct, amazing, NYC indie-rap label which was the mirror-opposite of Def Jux. An affiliation with Time Warner led to their demise. Most famous for putting out a record (The Coup's PARTY MUSIC) who's cover featured the band's members blowing up the World Trade Center - before 9-11 - which led to the label's offices being raided by the FBI after the actual attack.

2. Troubleman Unlimited
"Troubleman Mixtape" - Comp.
"Silence Equals Sound" - Six Parts Seven
The most diverse and consistenly amazing label in operation. Will go down in history.

1. SST
"New Day Rising" - Husker Du
"Sister" - Sonic Youth
The best.
