As I’ve mentioned before, I’m beginning work on a third theater piece in collaboration with director Gisele Vienne and composer Peter Rehberg/Pita, this time with a fourth collaborator -- Stephen O’Malley of the band Sunn0))). One of the things we’re investigating -- and which will likely end up in the theater piece in some form – is Krampus. Krampus is a thousand plus year old traditional Austrian ritual that takes place around Xmas. Essentially, on one night every year, people dress up in elaborate demonic costumes handmade of wood, animal hides and bones, get shit faced drunk/stoned, and roam the towns and countryside harassing and physically attacking people they believe to be guilty of having thought or done bad things over the previous twelve months.

pretty sweet deal to be working w/ peter rehberg. i'm a huge fan of his stuff as rehberg/bauer, pita and fenn'o'berg. should be worth checking out the final results.

That's so wacky, my family is Austrian and I don't ever remember hearing them mention this!
You learn something new everyday.
Holy shit - this is scary in all the right ways.
Is this exclusively an Austrian practice, or is Krampus - uh - "celebrated" in Germany as well?
Oh, never mind. All I had to do was keep reading. "...mostly centered around the Salzburg region."
